Can Invisalign fix my bite?

We talk a lot about transforming smiles here at Down House Dental, but braces began with correcting teeth first, smiles second. While the two have become inseparable now, a lot of patients still want to get their treatment and money’s worth by improving their bite while the work to achieve their new smile. Of course, the cosmetic benefits of Invisalign are well-documented as the braces themselves are clear and discreet, but do they help correct mouth function too?

The bite problems Invisalign can address

  • Gapped teeth leave your teeth and more gums more susceptible to disease and decay because of the vulnerability the spaces incur. Treatment with Invisalign can close these gaps to better the dental health of your teeth.
  • Overly crowded teeth are difficult to clean and therefore heighten your chances of decay and cavities. They can also impair mouth function and ache when at rest and in motion because of the two rows of teeth’s inability to fit together properly.
  • A deep bite is similar to an overbite and places a lot of pressure on the lower teeth. It is characterised by the upper row of teeth biting over the lower, wearing them down and even pushing them backwards to form a bit of a slope. This causes wear and tear as well as teeth and jaw ache.
  • An underbite is when the lower row of teeth bites over the top of the upper row, causing joint and jaw ache as well as limiting mouth function. It can misplace pressure onto the molars, causing wear and tear.
  • An open bite can cause poor or painful chewing, a speech impediment, and even lead to TMJ disorder (or temporomandibular joint disorder) which is when the jaw pops, clicks, or locks.
  • A crossbite causes one or more of the upper teeth to bite on the inside of the lower teeth. This can be detrimental to your jaw health if the crossbite worsens and can also affect your mouth function when resting and in motion.

Invisalign is one of the only discreet brace systems that doesn’t just focus on the ‘social six’ teeth, which are the ones immediately visible at the front of your mouth when you smile. Because the aligner trays are made from impressions of your whole mouth, not just the front teeth, they are made to straighten your whole set of teeth. They are custom-built to your needs, so you can rest assured that even your troublesome back teeth or the canines you never thought would straighten are treated.

Healthier teeth

Invisalign can help you achieve healthier teeth in general, because the straightening and aligning of your teeth create a more even surface. This means that food debris and bacteria don’t have as many ridges and crevices to get stuck in and they’re far easier to clean as they are a more even canvas. This lessens your chances of developing cavities and decay through uneven teeth, and even closing the gaps in your teeth can protect the gums beneath.

Braces transform smiles, this is true, but here at Raynesway Dental in Derby they also transform your mouth function and bite. If you’re interested in having Invisalign or would like to know more then feel free to get in touch with our team today.

How to clean your Invisalign Aligners

How to clean your Invisalign aligners

A task that can come across annoying and repetitive but something that cannot be avoided. Cleaning your Invisalign aligners are just as important as cleaning your teeth because not only do you minimise the risk of your Invisalign trays cracking, you’re also limiting your teeth you could experience. At Raynesway Dental Practice, we cannot stress enough that all Invisalign users need to maintain their cleanliness and keep the quality at an all-time high and have curated some cleaning tips below.

How to clean your Invisalign braces

Generally, you should soak your Invisalign in a denture cleaner or Invisalign cleaning crystals. After this, scrub them with a soft-bristled toothbrush that you have set aside for your aligners. Do both of these steps once a day to remove dry saliva, food debris, and any plaque deposits that may be developing. If you don’t, you could notice discolouration and a bad smell coming from your aligners! Because you need to clean them when you wake up in the morning, it might be a good idea to soak and brush them like this while you have your breakfast before putting them back in.

Morning care

Cleaning your Invisalign as soon as you wake up is essential. You should be wearing your aligners for 20 – 22 hours a day to maintain your treatment progression, which means wearing them at night while you sleep. Take them out in the morning, clean them and soak them as we already discussed above, and make sure to also brush your teeth. Don’t put your aligners back in your mouth until you’ve had breakfast and cleaned your teeth afterwards, because the aligners can hold food debris to your teeth and encourage bacteria to feast there.

Always remove your Invisalign to eat

One of the most attractive aspects of Invisalign is being able to remove them to eat and for social occasions, so make sure you do this for meals and snacks. Your trays are not designed to withstand the pressures of chewing and biting, so they could crack or break with repeated impact. Also, the foods that stain your teeth will readily stain your Invisalign as well, so even drinking tea or coffee with your aligners in risks them becoming stained. You can drink water whilst wearing them, but for everything else you eat or drink you should remove them.

Rinse them regularly

Every time you remove your Invisalign, you need to remember to rinse them with clean and cold water before storing them away or putting them back in. This helps prevent saliva and food debris from drying and sticking to the plastic. If left unrinsed, this could cause cracking, breakages, and visible deposits building up.

Clean your teeth before wearing them

After removing your Invisalign for snacks and meal times, always clean your teeth before you pop them back in you mouth. This helps prevent the amount of food debris that is still present when you place them back in. Because your aligners are warm and wet, a breeding ground for bacteria, it’s important to minimise the amount of nutrients available for these bacteria to consume and spread decay.

Why you should choose Invisalign

Published by . Filed under Invisalign

It has been reported as many as 40% of the British public are currently unhappy with their teeth. Our teeth do mean a lot to us, they’re visible during almost all our speech and expressions and help us function on a daily basis. If you’re unhappy with crooked, misaligned or just generally unappealing teeth, then the chances are you’ve probably considered straightening them before. Many people, however, tend to shy away from adult braces for the fear of having ‘train track’ type braces, and think it’s either them or bust. At Raynesway Dental we offer another solution in the heart of Derby.
