Dentures

Dentures are removable devices which provide a replacement for both missing teeth and for the surrounding tissue. Dentures come in both partial and complete forms.

A conventional complete denture can normally be placed in the mouth about two to three months after the teeth have been removed and when the gum tissue has healed. Immediate dentures, made before the teeth are extracted, can be positioned immediately. As considerable shrinkage of gums occurs during the healing process, immediate dentures should only be considered as a temporary solution.

Partial dentures consist of artificial replacement teeth attached to pink plastic bases or metal frameworks. The partial denture not only fills the spaces created by missing teeth, but also prevents the remaining teeth from moving within the gum.

Once the type of denture has been decided, development of the appliance takes about three to six weeks. Several appointments are required, as the following steps are taken to ensure a comfortable fit:

1. Impressions and measurements of your jaws are taken.

2. Moulds are created in the exact shape and position in which the denture will be placed. Shape, fit and colour are assessed, prior to casting of the final denture.

3. Once the final denture has been cast, adjustments are made as required.

Dentures are made to match your natural teeth as closely as possible, ensuring that there is no noticeable change to your smile. While dentures may feel awkward at first, once the muscles of your mouth have adapted to keep them in place and you have become accustomed to eating with them, normal life, with a full smile, can be resumed.
