Teeth whitening in Derby is becoming extremely popular. It’s only natural to want your smile to look as good as possible but even with the best dental habits, few, if any of us, will ever have truly gleaming white teeth without some cosmetic help.
Some people will choose teeth whitening to remove stains and discolouration built up over several years and perhaps made worse by smoking, caffeine or red wine. Others will just want to give their teeth an extra boost by improving their colour or ‘whiteness’. A special occasion such as getting married is also often a deciding factor in choosing to get your teeth whitened.
There are two main ways to get teeth whitened with the expert assistance of your dentist – at the dental surgery or using a special kit at home. Anyone considering going ahead should consult their dentist first, as not every set of teeth will be suitable for the process. Factors that could prevent whitening going ahead include having had veneers, being pregnant or having hypersensitive teeth.
The main way to get teeth whitened is by external bleaching, when bleaching gel is put on the teeth’s surface. This can be carried out either at the dental surgery or at home.
If you go for the home bleaching method with your dentist, there are some advantages to simply buying an over the counter kit. Your dentist will customise the rubber mouth trays to ensure they accurately fit your teeth and the bleaching gel used will probably be stronger, making it more effective.
The dentist will give you detailed instructions on how to use the mouth trays and how much gel to put in. To get the desired results you will have to wear the trays for between 30 and 60 minutes every day for between two and four weeks.
Getting your teeth whitened at the dental surgery is more expensive but you are in the hands of a specialist who also has additional technology to make the process more effective. Depending on the strength of the bleaching gel used, the dentist will probably place a rubber seal around the teeth. The gel is placed onto the teeth and a UV light is used to improve the whitening process. The appointment could take up to two hours.
It’s also possible to combine home bleaching and bleaching at the surgery, with the home kit being used before or after a visit to the dental surgery, but your dentist will advise you.
Whichever method you choose, your newly whitened teeth are bound to improve your confidence about flashing a big smile and perhaps even shave a few years off your appearance.
